The Secrets Edition – Photos & More!

Mouth Piece Storytelling – The Secrets Edition!

Thanks to Guest Storyteller Jeni De La O, the theme of secrets was uncovered! Right away, I knew it would be a wonderful theme for our little storytelling engine that could! Jeni is a Moth storyteller (she recently was on a main stage as a guest storyteller – this is a MAJOR storytelling accomplishment!), and she began her own bilingual storytelling series in Detroit called Relato! Detroit. This is Detroit’s FIRST bilingual – Spanish/English – storytelling event! Congratulations to Jeni for creating another wonderful space for storytelling.

At our Secrets event, Jeni shared a true, fascinating and love-filled story about her double life. Be sure to check out our podcast to hear her tell it! We were lucky to hear Jeni tell not one but two stories! Thank you Jeni!

A super thank you to all our Secret storytellers: Dorothy, Geoff, Ian, Kate and Steven.

AND CONGRATULATIONS TO THE MASTER MOUTH PIECE: STORYTELLER DOROTHY!

Storyteller Dorothy

Thank you to Villains – Geoff and Ian and the rest of the staff. Thank you to Suede Productions our forever sponsor, and Cypher Systems for our prize sponsorship. Thank you to Lauren Hedges for doing sound and taking these beautiful photos! Also, for keeping our podcasts alive and well! Thank you to Jeni De La O and her family. And, of course, thank you storytellers and audience – we can’t do this without you!

May the stories continue to flow and grow!

Mouth Piece – The Danger Edition! The Master Mouth Piece Is…

Our Guest Storyteller Craig Pearson – bungee jumping!

MOUTH PIECE STORYTELLING – THE DANGER EDITION!

Ah, what a superb event we had last night! Our Danger Edition was so many things – emotional, riveting, scary, funny, exciting…and literally dangerous – I totally gave myself a fat lip from bonking my mouth onto the microphone! DOH! Our Guest Storyteller, journalist and writer Craig Pearson, gave a dynamic, heart-breaking and humorous photo presentation of his ‘dangerous’ life as a journalist. Honestly, I had to cover my eyes and hold in my tears a bunch of times! Thank you Craig!

It is my great pleasure to announce that the Master Mouth Piece for the Danger Edition is… Storyteller Geoff!

Geoff and I – cheesin’! Photo credit: Collin Meloche

We had seven brave storytellers take the stage – photos forthcoming – and each had a unique and terrifying story to tell!

Yes, there are prizes to win at Mouth Piece!

Watch out! We are a punny bunch over here…

After a day of dangerous down-pouring – the sun came out!

Seven brave storytellers filled the board, the stage and our hearts!

Thank you also to our musical guest, singer/songwriter (and dangerous heartbreaker!) Brendan Scott Friel!

Thank you to our sponsor Suede Productions, and Cypher Systems. And of course, to the team at Villains Baestro – our unofficial ‘home’ for Mouth Piece!

Stay tuned for more photos!

And the MASTER MOUTH OFF STORYTELLER IS…!

A heartfelt thank you and congratulations go out to all our competing storytellers who braved the stage at The Rondo and shared their souls at our First Annual Master Mouth-Off!

Here she is! Our first Master Mouth-Off Winner – Storyteller Jodi!

biv_3658

What a thrill it was to hand Storyteller Jodi the Master Mouth-Off microphone trophy! She is our first Master Mouth Off Winner – and she won our hearts again!

The evening was all that I hoped it would be – we had a full-house audience, entertaining and heart-felt stories followed by incredible live music!

Feast your eyes on the photos that show what I’m talking about! Thank you to our photographer, Lauren Hedges!

The evening’s stories began with a song. Guest Storyteller Satori Shakoor (not Shakira! #insidejoke) opened her mouth and let out a stirring, soulful, powerful anthemic prayer that had us all barely breathing and tearing up. She spoke of her journey into the life of an artist storyteller, and how she holds her passion and power for change on her sleeve right there beside her glowing heart.

Our competing storytellers were all nervous! Each of them did an outstanding job – those nerves didn’t win! The first storyteller was Joe who shared a very personal growing-up story about his family trips to Ottawa for the holidays. Joe shared with a courage that brought tears to our eyes. Thank you Joe!

Next up was storyteller Nathanya. Nathanya’s story was short and sweet, well-crafted, humourous and quite lovely. Her theme was Love. Storyteller Danah shared a holiday story about her scented licence, raw tarts and playdough filled gravy!

Guest Storyteller Dameon Wilburn had us gasping for air we were laughing so hard at her story about ‘Dark Vadar’. Both Dame and Satori took the stage and lit.it.on.fire!

Storytellers Jodi and Natasha rounded out our evening of stories, and shined a light on how human emotions – love, fear, and self-love – can move us to be our best.

In the end, our judges chose Storyteller Jodi as the first annual Master Mouth-Off Winner!

After a quick staging switch, the Soul Delegation blew the roof of the Rondo with their covers of hit funk songs by the greats like Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye. Indeed, we could not control our dancing!

Thank you again to the ACHF grant, the Rondo family, our sound guru Scott, Lauren, DJ Cam, the Soul Delegation, Satori, Dameon, our storytellers and all their family and friends, and to our long-standing, couldn’t-do-this-without-you sponsor Suede Productions.

Stay tuned for the podcast of this first annual Master Mouth -off, and details about our forthcoming shows!

Mouth Piece – The Love Edition – Photos!

Our apologies for taking a bit longer than usual to post these wonderful photos taken by the talented Emma Truswell of Blush Photos, but here they are! (It’s my fault, by the way, Emma gave me the photos a few days after the event! I’ve been busy!!)

I can still feel the powerful words of all the brave storytellers who shared at our Love Event…sticking to me like the best kind of smooth skin cream! Let’s let the photos tell a story now, shall we?

It’s  important to set the scene! Finding things to show ‘love’ was a fun endeavour. We tried out a new ‘sharing’ system – anonymous love notes – and it was a hit! Definitely going to continue this extra way of telling stories.

Your hostess-with-the-mostess Vanessa (that’s me!) gets things started. (Her/my sincerest apologies for the slew of bad words that proceeded to come out of my mouth during the show! I’ll work on that.)

Guest Storyteller John Wing (aka. comedian extraordinaire, and published poet! His new book of poetry ‘I’ll Be There Soon’ launches on April 5th! Details here!) shared the story of how he met his wife. Picture comedy shows, long drives, deserted hotels, dirty bedsheets…and true love in the making! Thank you John!

For the first time, we had 10 (yahoo!) brave people who shared their stories. Our goal is to have ten storytellers a show, so I hope we can keep the numbers up! Whether you were in the audience or on the stage though, you could feel the powerful love emanating from each storyteller!

Here are the Love Edition storytellers!

STORYTELLER KAREN

The first one up, Karen shared the story of how her hubby proposed. In the backyard. After he peed!

STORYTELLER MICHAEL

There are lessons to be learned from fish. Love lessons.

STORYTELLER JORDAN

Note to self: hanging out in front of the place the person you like works…might not be the best way to get her to like you.

STORYTELLER NATASHA

Natasha said what we all need to hear – that our love story with our selves is truly the most important. Thank you Natasha.

STORYTELLER BRYAN

One’s history, and the storytellers within it, can set a course of action in our lives. That’s what Bryan’s story taught us.

 STORYTELLER SAM

On saying ‘I love you’. Storyteller Sam shared a story filled with wisdom about the first time someone told her he loved…and, goats. There were goats in this story.

STORYTELLER ALEXANDRA

Featuring an ex-girlfriend…and a cat. Was there a goat in this story too?

STORYTELLER HANI

His was a broken heart love story. A necessary story on the theme of love. Thanks for being courageous and sharing Hani! (He was super nervous!!) *He also writer for The Lance student newspaper and wrote a fabulous article about the event! Double thank you Hani!)

STORYTELLER ASHLEY

Storyteller Ashley told a Tinder story. Ah, Tinder. There were bus drivers and exes…and certainly adventures!

STORYTELLER BENNY

Love is love. That was Storyteller Benny’s main message. He made us laugh (bathroom in a gay bar experience), and he made us think deeply and shed a tear.

And the MASTER MOUTHPIECE is:

STORYTELLER NATASHA!

MOUTHPIECE FEB 2016 LOW RES-63

Natasha won a fancy prize, and will move on to the Master Mouth Off later this year.

It’s true, we all have love stories, and these storytellers really opened their hearts to us. We are grateful! Everyone was so loving – the storytellers, the audience, the bar staff…It was truly a magical night. That’s the magic of storytelling, and why Mouth Piece exists. Let’s keep this love a flowin’! See you at the next event! Thank you the Foundry Pub family (we loved you so much, we’re going back for the next Mouth Piece!), DJ Cam, Emma and Ken, Nick, and my family,Suede (our sponsor!), and to our special sponsor Spotvin Creative!

Mouth Piece – The Food Edition – A Saucy Success!

MOUTHPIECE SEPT 2015 BLUSH PHOTOS LOW RES-5

Where do we begin? We had turkey, toast, and buckets of blueberries. We had cheesies, calamari, and chilli on the floor. The stories shared on the Mouth Piece stage for the Food Edition were downright delicious.

The evening began with a packed-house – standing room only thank you very much! – at Rino’s Kitchen & Ale House. Infused with some (questionable) joke-telling by me (!), the evening went stupendously!

Your host (me!), reading some food-friendly jokes. (No offence food.)

With DJ Cam on the tables and some Suede Productions volunteers setting up gear, it’s clear that everyone who comes to a Mouth Piece is guaranteed a great time! The energy was high and exciting!

DJ Cam, Ken, and Nick (my hubby!), three parts of the Suede crew. A fun bunch, indeed.

Our youngest audience member, Miss Sylvie, had fun listening to the stories and playing with the wipe board. Maybe one day she’ll take the mic and share a story too! (Like her brave mama Cheryl!)
